J. R. R. Tolkien & The Eucharist

A devout Roman Catholic, J. R. R. Tolkien is the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Tolkien once wrote in a letter about The Lord of the Rings...

“a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like ‘religion,’ to cults or practices, in the imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism.”

Tolkien practiced his faith throughout his life and considered it his first priority. He deeply loved Our Lady and had a special devotion to St. John the Evangelist. He even did the Forty Hours devotion of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. His deep and special relationship with the Blessed Sacrament later on led him to write about it in a letter to one of his sons (Michael) that it is "the one great thing to love on earth."

“Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament … There you will find romance, glory, honor, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves upon earth.”

Here is the letter Tolkien wrote to his son:

He did not only write famous fiction stories but he was also a scholar and a philologist (the study of the history of languages). Additionally, he was husband and a father.

"I find it for myself difficult to believe that anyone who has ever been to Communion, even once, with at least a right intention, can ever again reject Him without grave blame. (However, He alone knows each unique soul and its circumstances.)"
